Private Akaroa Harbour Cruise to see Hector’s Dolphins
- Duration: 8 Hours (approx.)
- Location: Akaroa
- Product code: PRI AK01
The harbour town of Akaroa is approximately 90 minutes driving time from Christchurch. Akaroa sits within the eroded crater of an extinct volcano, a small town set in a dramatic landscape of harbour and hills, rich in both French and Māori history. Akaroa waters are home to Hector’s Dolphins, the world’s smallest dolphin.
The journey from Christchurch explores the volcanic Summit Road which (on a clear day) affords spectacular views of Christchurch, the Canterbury Plains, Lyttleton and Akaroa harbours. The highway passes through the historic and arty town of Little River and runs alongside unique wetlands. On arrival in Akaroa your guide will give you a brief orientation of the town before checking you in for your harbour cruise.
You'll cruise around an extinct volcanic crater and experience majestic scenery and stunning wildlife on daily nature cruises. You will have the chance to view the rare and native dolphin - the
Hector's Dolphin, as well as penguins and other sea birds.
Following your cruise, lunch will be enjoyed at an award winning harbourside café.
If time permits you will have the opportunity to wander around this charming French influenced town and browse its Museum of Settlers’ history and art and craft shops.
Stops along the way will include, time and weather permitting, The Little River Art Gallery, Barry’s Bay Cheese Factory and Birdlings Flat.
