Day 1: Queenstown to Glacier Country

Embark on the second day of your journey, beginning in Queenstown and heading toward the mesmerizing Glacier Country—a region where glaciers extend into regenerating temperate rainforests, creating a truly special experience.

Travel north from Queenstown, passing through the rugged and remote Crown Range, once the site of gold diggings in the 1860s.  Follow the road, skirting the banks of Lake Hawea.

As you continue your journey, the road makes a slight turn, rising over a ridge. Lake Wanaka is left behind, and you reach the southern shores of Lake Hawea. Follow the shoreline of this picturesque lake, reaching Wanaka village—an inviting destination nestled in the heart of the Southern Alps.

Depart from Wanaka, traveling northward through the mighty Haast River valley. Follow the Haast Highway, , you can observe how the landscape again changes dramatically as the road
climbs over the Haast Pass from the drier tussock lands of Otago to the dense rain forest
of the West Coast to .
On the way, you can take short walks on a remote
beach or to see waterfalls and if there has been
recent rainfall, the Haast River passing through the
gorge known as the Gates of Haast can be truly
spectacular.

After crossing the Haast Pass, continue your journey north, reaching Glacier Country—an area renowned for its captivating glaciers and stunning landscapes. Explore this unique glaciated region, where short walks offer opportunities to experience the rainforest with the glacier in the background, surrounded by the shattered, glacier-formed landscape.

Marvel at the Southern Alps and the towering peaks of Mt Cook and Mt Tasman, dominating the horizon. Optional walks to glacier viewpoints provide a chance to witness the glacier's descent down the mountain into the rainforest. For those seeking an added thrill, consider an exciting helicopter ride offering panoramic views of the Southern Alps, with a snow landing on the upper reaches of the glacier (please note that optional helicopter trips and scenic flights are not included in the tour cost).

Conclude your day in Glacier Country, ready for the next leg of your unforgettable journey.

Day 2: West Coast and the Glaciers to Christchurch

Embark on an awe-inspiring journey, starting on the West Coast with its mesmerizing glaciers and heading back toward Christchurch. 

Witness the West Coast forests and the remnants of the last Ice Age in the form of kettle lakes created by the melting ice sheets. 

Visit Hokitika, a town with a rich history as the former capital of Westland and a bustling gold mining center. It was also a significant place for the Maori, who sought their treasured greenstone (jade) here. Explore the town's bustling center with its features of greenstone and gold, displayed in various art and craft shops.

Follow the rivers that flow back toward the East Coast, noting the shifts in rainforest landscapes and the diverse varieties of ferns that dominate the region. Marvel at the road winding its way up the spectacular Otira Gorge, a geographer's dream, and journey through Arthur's Pass National Park, departing from Westland.

Your guide will showcase some of the highlights of Arthur's Pass National Park, revealing its natural wonders and unique features. Depart from the park and re-enter Canterbury province, heading toward Christchurch. 

Arrive in Christchurch, marking the end of your remarkable journey from the West Coast and the glaciers.
